Voiceover – My Winning TEAM! VOAtlanta 2015

March 16, 2015 by Dan Friedman

In best movie trailer voice:

SIX RANDOMLY SELECTED TEAMS … SIX TOP PRODUCER/MENTORS … ONE TASK, PRODUCE A 60 SECOND COMMERCIAL … WITH NO SCRIPT … IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS!

Okay… let’s bring it down a notch. 🙂

VOAtlanta was, once again, an incredible event filled with great opportunities for learning, networking and entertainment (Did you see James Arnold Taylor’s one man show? AMAZING!!)

The greatest thrill for me was leading a team in the first ever VOAtlanta Team Challenge. Our task was to produce a 60 second commercial spot promoting next year’s event. The rules: Must contain the word “Elevate”. Must contain a minimum of three voice actors who each have at least ten seconds of copy. Must (if needed) use music and sound effects found on the audioblocks.com website. The teams were selected at random. No script was provided and all of the mentors were limited to the equipment we brought with us or to what was available at the conference.

Once the teams were assigned, the first challenge was locating everyone on the team. With so much going on, it took awhile to simply get everybody in the same space to begin collaborating. Next, develop a concept and write a script. My team was amazing. Everyone contributed ideas that were instrumental in turning a simple concept into something tangible. Our ideas flowed and our script came together very quickly. We all felt really good about where we were headed.

The voice booth sat in the extremely noisy expo room. While crowd noise was definitely a problem, using that booth during that time period was our only viable option. Once each team member recorded his or her script, it was time to put the pieces together. With nothing more than a laptop, a pair of headphones and (thankfully) my favorite DAW, the work of editing began. The voice actors made this part easy. There were not many takes to choose from, but plenty of great takes from which to choose. AN ENGINEER’S DREAM!!

Next, search for sound effects and music and mix the spot. As a group, we discussed music choices and why one cut of music may be more suitable then another. We also discussed the basics of audio processing. While I had my favorite DAW, I did not have my favorite suite of Universal Audio processors and plugins. But, this competition was all about learning and working outside of our usual routines. Not just for my team, but for me as well.

Throughout the entire process, my primary concerns as team leader were that the process was educational and fun. I believed those goals had been met. I was proud of everyone on the team and happy with the spot we produced … and then something else happened. By Sunday morning, the votes were in … we knew WE HAD WON!!

Everyone on the team received prizes from Sennheiser, Kaotica and FREE REGISTRATION to VOAtlanta 2016. I knew our efforts would be recognized, but this was more than any of us could have imagined.

CONGRATULATIONS to VOAtlanta 2015 TEAM DAN:

Voiceover – My FaffCon Wrap-up and …Now What?

September 25, 2014 by Dan Friedman

logo 4voAnother FaffCon has come and gone and …WOW, they just keep getting better and better. Each and every FaffCon holds a special place in my heart. My friend and fellow “Faffer” Brad Venable wrote in his latest blog how “transcendent” the FaffCon experience can be. Definitely check it out. Many people, including myself, have either had a similar experience, will have a similar experience, or experience this transcendence every single time. Pretty cool.

IMG_1401This FaffCon took place at the Westward Look Resort and Spa in Tucson, AZ. A place that seemed to get more beautiful every time I turned around. Thanks to a year and a half of acting classes, where I learned deep relaxation/meditation techniques, I was able to take full advantage of the meditation labyrinth.IMG_1385 IMG_1385I also enjoyed a massage and my first ever facial (Didn’t know what to expect, thought it might be silly, but actually …ITS AWESOME). These experiences were a great way to start the unconference. All of this (plus the learning opportunities, reconnecting with old friends, making new friends) as Joey Schaljo so eloquently described it… “exfoliated my soul!” Haha, brilliant!!

Upon returning home, the goal is to keep that momentum going. For me this means taking a day to rest, collect my thoughts, and reflect on all that I learned and experienced. Once that day is done, its time to begin putting it all to work. My first task is follow-up. Plans get made while at an event such as this and I find that following up immediately with the people with whom I made those plans is critical. Next, I go over my notes and set goals. I also write a blog about it. 😉

IMG_1429Some goals will be simple, easily attainable and require just a small amount of effort. Other goals will be bigger and the ingredients needed to achieve them will need to simmer awhile to develop. Voiceover is, after all, a Crockpot career. As a relatively new solopreneur, goal setting, list-making and tracking will need to become a part of my everyday routine. Thanks to all that I learned from so many amazing people over this past weekend, I should have an easier time with all of it. I’m so grateful to everyone who shared their experience and expertise over the weekend. More importantly, thank you for your love, support and friendship. It isn’t often that, as adults, we make friends who will last a lifetime. Over the last few years, thanks to FaffCon, I have made several.

What’s next? I’ll be heading to Nashville on October 5th to co-teach a workshop with Joe Loesch. Nashville is a great city and I’ve heard they might even have a recording studio there should I need to use one. 😉 After that, I’ll be heading to Ft. Myers for the November to Remember VO Event hosted by Randy Thomas. In December, I’ll teach a voiceover workshop at my acting home, Screen Artists Co-Op. Then, almost before you know it, FaffCamp in San Antonio!

I look forward to seeing everyone again very soon! I wish you all phenomenal success in your VO career.

Voiceover – My Declaration of Independence

July 12, 2014 by Dan Friedman

SOUND4VOStudioAhh, independence. It is a great feeling to live in a place where (and a time when) we have the ability to pursue our dreams. The month of July is when we as citizens of the United States celebrate our independence. Since my birthday also happens to be at this time of year, it has always been a special time for me. This year though, independence is taking on a whole new meaning. This year, I am truly free. I am free to run my own business. Free from working under anyone but myself.

Until the end of last month I worked for, what was for many years, a thriving production company. But, just as the studio landscape has changed in the music business over the last decade, the studio landscape has also been changing in the voiceover industry. Financial realities and a changing business model did not make it possible for me to stay. “It’s nothing personal, just business.” So, after thirteen years, I became truly independent. It was a good run while it lasted and I wish them well.

I’m excited about this new adventure. Sound4VO has been around for a while now and I am thrilled to finally be able to give it the attention it deserves.

There are no guarantees in business, but I am starting with a sound foundation. (See what I did there?) I am a voice actor with the added benefit of being a certified audio engineer. Or is it the other way around? 😉 Either way… voiceover, directing, producing, audio editing, mixing and more… I have full audio production capabilities. At my Sound4VO studio, it can be done. It can be done with personal service and at reasonable prices. From this day forward, I am working on MY business full time. Let the celebratory fireworks begin! Oh wait, there’s no budget for fireworks yet.

For the last few years, I’ve been blogging and providing what I hope has been helpful information to people who work in all areas of this industry. I plan to continue to do my best to raise the bar. Whether you have the dream of becoming a voiceover talent or are a working pro who needs a fresh pair of ears and honest feedback, I would like to help you achieve your goals by offering my services as a director, coach and mentor.

I believe that if you work hard, are good at what you do and are someone with whom other people would like to work, there is nothing that can stop you from achieving success.

Sound4VO is open for business and this is my personal declaration of independence. Thank you to everyone who has offered their love and support.
