Voiceover – My Declaration of Independence

By Dan Friedman

Ahh, independence. It is a great feeling to live in a place where (and a time when) we have the ability to pursue our dreams. The month of July is when we as citizens of the United States celebrate our independence. Since my birthday also happens to be at this time of year, it has always been a special time for me. This year though, independence is taking on a whole new meaning. This year, I am truly free. I am free to run my own business. Free from working under anyone but myself.

Until the end of last month I worked for, what was for many years, a thriving production company. But, just as the studio landscape has changed in the music business over the last decade, the studio landscape has also been changing in the voiceover industry. Financial realities and a changing business model did not make it possible for me to stay. “It’s nothing personal, just business.” So, after thirteen years, I became truly independent. It was a good run while it lasted and I wish them well.

I’m excited about this new adventure. Sound4VO has been around for a while now and I am thrilled to finally be able to give it the attention it deserves.

There are no guarantees in business, but I am starting with a sound foundation. (See what I did there?) I am a voice actor with the added benefit of being a certified audio engineer. Or is it the other way around? 😉 Either way… voiceover, directing, producing, audio editing, mixing and more… I have full audio production capabilities. At my Sound4VO studio, it can be done. It can be done with personal service and at reasonable prices. From this day forward, I am working on MY business full time. Let the celebratory fireworks begin! Oh wait, there’s no budget for fireworks yet.

For the last few years, I’ve been blogging and providing what I hope has been helpful information to people who work in all areas of this industry. I plan to continue to do my best to raise the bar. Whether you have the dream of becoming a voiceover talent or are a working pro who needs a fresh pair of ears and honest feedback, I would like to help you achieve your goals by offering my services as a director, coach and mentor.

I believe that if you work hard, are good at what you do and are someone with whom other people would like to work, there is nothing that can stop you from achieving success.

Sound4VO is open for business and this is my personal declaration of independence. Thank you to everyone who has offered their love and support.

How can I help you?

Sound4VO – well, you actually helped me out in a really critical way maybe not even knowing it, but I dropped a “tip” in your PayPal jar because I had a question- specifically about Russian tubes in an ART preamp I was thinking about buying. Those questions, you pay for because well, expert opinion. I needed one and didn’t have time to fart around! I’ll never forget the answer- “If you’re not going to spend 5k on a tube preamp- you are better off with an analogue one.” Some info about the tubes in question but I missed that… My new years resolution had been “To seek out experts, ask questions- follow advice”. Hmm…I called and canceled the pre which was on back order, and a friend recommended a then new player in the analogue preamp market- Warm Audio- Brice Young’s company. I bought one of his preamps and life as I knew it, changed. January 3rd 2013…Now, 18 months later- I have the TB12 and WA76 in my studio. My accountant said after Q-1 2014 “if you don’t invest XXXX you’re going to pay a ton of taxes…” So based on an expert opinion delivered – AND FOLLOWED (even though I wasn’t thrilled to hear it) completely changed the playing field – for my competitors. They hate you… I got the best advice 25 bucks ever bought.

WOW!!! While I find that rather surprising news, I’m really excited for you Dan. I had run my VO business “on the side” for many years and it took me getting layed off to make the final jump. Looking back I should have done it much much earlier, but then hindsight is 20/20. It’s scary, but oh soooooooo worth it! Good luck to you and let me know if you need anything. 🙂

Dan, I must say I liked the definition of your independence.

Entrepreneurship brings excitement, achievement and success to the one who is hard working.

Especially for someone like you who is multi-talented as a voice actor, director, producer etc.
