Voiceover – My Winning TEAM! VOAtlanta 2015

In best movie trailer voice:

SIX RANDOMLY SELECTED TEAMS … SIX TOP PRODUCER/MENTORS … ONE TASK, PRODUCE A 60 SECOND COMMERCIAL … WITH NO SCRIPT … IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS!

Okay… let’s bring it down a notch. 🙂

VOAtlanta was, once again, an incredible event filled with great opportunities for learning, networking and entertainment (Did you see James Arnold Taylor’s one man show? AMAZING!!)

The greatest thrill for me was leading a team in the first ever VOAtlanta Team Challenge. Our task was to produce a 60 second commercial spot promoting next year’s event. The rules: Must contain the word “Elevate”. Must contain a minimum of three voice actors who each have at least ten seconds of copy. Must (if needed) use music and sound effects found on the audioblocks.com website. The teams were selected at random. No script was provided and all of the mentors were limited to the equipment we brought with us or to what was available at the conference.

Once the teams were assigned, the first challenge was locating everyone on the team. With so much going on, it took awhile to simply get everybody in the same space to begin collaborating. Next, develop a concept and write a script. My team was amazing. Everyone contributed ideas that were instrumental in turning a simple concept into something tangible. Our ideas flowed and our script came together very quickly. We all felt really good about where we were headed.

The voice booth sat in the extremely noisy expo room. While crowd noise was definitely a problem, using that booth during that time period was our only viable option. Once each team member recorded his or her script, it was time to put the pieces together. With nothing more than a laptop, a pair of headphones and (thankfully) my favorite DAW, the work of editing began. The voice actors made this part easy. There were not many takes to choose from, but plenty of great takes from which to choose. AN ENGINEER’S DREAM!!

Next, search for sound effects and music and mix the spot. As a group, we discussed music choices and why one cut of music may be more suitable then another. We also discussed the basics of audio processing. While I had my favorite DAW, I did not have my favorite suite of Universal Audio processors and plugins. But, this competition was all about learning and working outside of our usual routines. Not just for my team, but for me as well.

Throughout the entire process, my primary concerns as team leader were that the process was educational and fun. I believed those goals had been met. I was proud of everyone on the team and happy with the spot we produced … and then something else happened. By Sunday morning, the votes were in … we knew WE HAD WON!!

Everyone on the team received prizes from Sennheiser, Kaotica and FREE REGISTRATION to VOAtlanta 2016. I knew our efforts would be recognized, but this was more than any of us could have imagined.

CONGRATULATIONS to VOAtlanta 2015 TEAM DAN:

Voiceover – What I Took With Me On My Summer Vacation

August 25, 2014 by Dan Friedman

I spent quite a bit of time relaxing and enjoying the beautiful weather we had this summer. For me the highlights were seeing Steely Dan at the Biltmore Estate (they were incredible) and I also spent a week out on the beach at Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This was the first time I had ever been to a beach outside of the beaches in Florida. Ocracoke was pristine and beautiful. We brought our two kids, our dog and (since they were too young to stay home by themselves) our two new kittens along with us. I’m sure we looked like the Beverly Hillbillies driving the nine hour drive to and from the beach. The car was jam packed!

Ocracoke SunsetHowever, the voiceover business doesn’t stop when we go on vacation. So naturally, I had to leave some room in the car for a travel rig so that I could continue to do auditions and, yes, do a couple of jobs that came in during the week. Since returning, I have seen several posts in social media, and received a few inquiries regarding a travel recording setup. So today, I’m sharing my list of gear with you. This setup worked well for me and I received excellent feedback from my clients on the sound quality. The following is what I brought along. Nearly all of it fit into my computer bag.

My microphone – The Sennheiser 416. It’s lightweight, offers excellent rejection of the surrounding environment and is very sturdy. The 416 has become my go to microphone in my regular studio setup as well. This is helpful as using the same microphone presents one less variable in my overall sound whether I am in the studio or on the road.

My preamp/interface – The Centrance MicPortPro. It is very compact and the preamp offers plenty of headroom and low self-noise. I placed the windsock on the microphone (eliminating the need to also bring a pop-screen) and placed the mic and the MPP inside the Sennheiser mic case for easy travel.

My recording device – I brought my MacBook Pro and my iPad. I travel with both. Yes, this is heavier and takes up a bit more space, but editing is much easier on the laptop and the iPad is much more useful for viewing scripts.

A ProLine PLDMS1 mic stand. This little stand is quite sturdy. It folds up easily and fits in a computer bag. The only drawback to this stand is that the mic clip adaptor screws on really tight without much effort. It required pliers to remove it. This was annoying, but not a show-stopper.

Because you can never be too prepared, as a backup to all of this, I brought along my Apogee MiC.

A packing/moving blanket. I needed something to use while laying out on the beach! Actually, I did my recording from the back seat of my car. Modern cars can be quite effective as emergency vocal booths. I used the packing blanket to throw over the two front seats giving me increased isolation from the large front window and thus less sound reflecting off of the glass. Yes, I could have also used it as a beach blanket.

The most important item was one that was already provided… high-speed internet. This is a must for sending and receiving files. Also, while it wasn’t necessary on this trip, with high-speed internet access I could have used ipDTL or Source Connect Now.

So, there you have it… my travel setup. Keep in mind, everyone’s sound and situation are different. What worked well for me may not be the perfect setup for you. In other words, whether you are in your studio or out on the road…  your mileage may vary. 😉

I hope you have had a fantastic summer! What do you bring out on the road?

Great time at VO2013 Atlanta!

March 28, 2013 by Dan Friedman

Last weekend I had the great pleasure of meeting and hanging out with some of the brightest stars in the voiceover business. Gerald Griffith of Voiceover City put together a top notch group of coaches, agents and talent for VO2013 and it was a thrill to be among them.

As I often like to do, I want to thank some of the people who, for me, made the event extra special.

David Goldberg and Karen of Edge Studios – It was so much fun hanging out with the both of you and working at the Edge table. I’m honored to be a part of the Edge family.

Christopher Currier of Neumann/Sennheiser – SO great to meet you and, seriously, I can’t help but like a guy who could talk microphones all day and night. The hat… is one of my most prized possessions. YOU ROCK just as much as Neumann and Sennheiser microphones.

Mara Junot – I just LOVE you Mara Junot! Thanks for being a great friend and for being you.

Julie Williams – It was fun getting to work with you. If your system ever crashes again while out on the road… I’ve got your back. 😉

Gabby Nistico – I thoroughly enjoyed sharing some laughs with you and representing the Carolinas! You are instrumental in making things happen here and I thank you for it.

Jeffrey Umberger – Atlanta’s best voice talent agent. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of the panel (We’ll have to ask Gerald for more time next time around). Thank you for all of the opportunities and thank you for being more than just an agent, but also a friend.

Sarah Carpenter – Thank you for your kind words. I’m excited about the possibilities.

Nancy Wolfson – Of course you are even more beautiful in person, but more importantly, you are quite simply one of the most brilliant people in our business. Your presentation did not disappoint. I’ve “followed” your advice 😉 and so should everyone who wants to reach greater levels of success.

Marc Cashman– What a thrill it was to be able to have dinner and spend real time with you. Thank you for being a mentor, for inviting me to be a part of your presentation and for your ongoing support and friendship.

John Taylor and Jaye Delai – I’m thanking the two of you together and individually because you are both such inspirations.

John – We’ve shared several brief quips online or “hi, how are you’s” in passing over the years, but I’m so grateful we had the opportunity to really talk. You are a funny guy and I learned so much. I’m sorry you had to leave so abruptly. Best wishes to your family.

Jaye – The insight, encouragement and wisdom you offered me will be so helpful as I embark on this new and very exciting phase of my career. Things you have been dealing with would make lesser men simply want to give up. NOT YOU! You are a super talented and amazing guy. I truly wish you the best moving forward, you deserve it.

Thank you to everyone who I met over the weekend and to all of you for making it special. Thanks also to everyone who purchased a copy of Sound Advice – Voiceover From an Audio Engineer’s Perspective. I hope to see many of you at FaffCamp in Charlotte in May and hopefully again in Atlanta next year!
